Shom Datta enters his first season
at the helm as the head coach of the Men's Hockey program at the National
Sports Academy. Datta joins the NSA community after five years as
the head coach at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake.
His teams at North Country regularly made the post season including a 2006
National Runners- up in the NJCAA National Tournament. In addition
to their post season success, They compiled a .500 record versus NCAA DIII
opponents and sent many players to the NCAA and also minor pro in Germany,
Finland, Australia, and the Mid Atlantic Hockey League. Prior
to coaching at NCCC, Datta was the head JV/varsity assistant coach at New
England College, an NCAA DIII power in Henniker, NH. Prior to his US
college coaching experience, Coach Datta played professionally in Europe
and graduated from Hamline University in 1998 with a degree in Business
Management. He was also a three year member of their NCAA DIII
program. His goal for the Mountaineers at NSA is to raise the
program to the level of a national powerhouse and be a major developer of
solid citizens and college hockey players. The Mountaineers will
reach this goal by reaching for their highest potential by competing like
warriors, while conducting themselves as gentlemen.
Jesse Broadfoot returns to his alma
mater as an assistant coach. Jesse graduated in 2004 after playing 5
years with NSA. The highlight of his NSA career includes being
recognized for the very distinguished Colby Wheeler Award in 2004.
The Colby Wheeler goes to one senior in recognition for their
exemplification of sportsmanship and leadership as determined by the
student body. Jesse's college hockey career was cut short by
injuries and instead he headed south to attend Wingate University in
Charlotte, NC, earning a degree in Physical Education. Jesse is as
excited to return to NSA as NSA is to have him as a part of the coaching
staff. Jesse's main responsibility will be working with the players
on an individual basis, running goaltending sessions, and also making all
travel arrangements for the program. As Coach Broadfoot continues
his work with the program he will also play a role in recruiting and the
marketing of the team.
