Boys' Hockey
National Sports Academy takes a unique approach to developing successful student-athletes. During the competitive season the boys' hockey team focuses on player development through on-ice practices, weight room training, and in the classroom with video and concept development. The goal is to provide an environment that fosters creativity and hard work in each one of our players.
The program plays a competitive schedule of 50-60 games against prep schools and junior teams across North America. Our student-athletes showcase their abilities to numerous college and junior teams as they look to future.

Nicholas Unger: Head Coach Boys' Hockey
Nick has significant experience identifying quality student-athletes as well as coaching both goalies and defenseman. Before coming to NSA, Unger served as top assistant hockey coach at both the College at Brockport and Nichols College. While serving as an assistant coach at both schools, Unger was the team's head recruiter and scouted potential players in various junior “A” and Prep hockey organizations. Previously, Unger also was the General Manager/Director of Hockey Operations for Puckmasters Hockey Training in Marlborough, MA. Unger graduated from Nichols in 2008 with a B.S. in Business Administration, with a concentration in Sport Management. Coach Unger is from Brockport, NY where he grew up playing hockey for Tri-County Youth Hockey. Upon graduation from high school, Nick played for SUNY Canton and the Buffalo JR. Lightning (Sabres) of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). He was then recruited to play for Nichols College in the ECAC Northeast, NCAA Division III. After graduating, Coach Unger was an important coaching component in the 2009 Nichols College championship team.

Ryan Bailey: Assistant Boys' Hockey Coach
Ryan Bailey graduated from Hamilton College in 2003 with a degree in government. While at Hamilton, Ryan was a four year varsity letter winner and assistant captain of the men’s ice hockey team. He has been involved in independent schools for ten years as a teacher, coach, residential dorm parent, and as an associate director of admission. Ryan started his independent school career at the National Sports Academy in the summer of 2004 serving as a history teacher, Boy’s Ice Hockey Coach, and residential faculty. While at NSA Ryan met his wife of five years, Alison, who was then a teacher at the Northwood School. After three years at NSA he then moved down the road to Northwood where he taught both World and United States History while serving as the assistant coach with the Boy’s Junior Hockey Team. After three more years in Lake Placid Ryan and his wife moved on to The Pennington School in New Jersey where he continued to teach history, work in admissions, and was the Head Ice Hockey coach. After three years at Pennington he then moved closer to family and worked one year at Canterbury School in Connecticut where he taught United States History and was the assistant coach with the Boy’s Ice Hockey program while also working in admissions. Ryan and his wife have one son, Griffin, who is three.
